My story
A number of years ago, I was camping with my family and I noticed an immense amount of acorns on the ground. Initially, my family had an acorn fight. Yes, we threw acorns at each other. It’s how we roll. Then I got to wondering, “There MUST be something people can do with these.” And so began my love of foraging.
When I start wondering, I jump on Google. Seriously, you can learn anything from the Google machine. I learned how to leech acorns and make them edible. It lead to acorn flour which lead to acorn brownies. So fun. Since then, I have found myself searching my yard, the roadsides, parks, you name it for wild edibles. Truly, the world is our oyster. We just have to go out and find it.
I must be honest, I am no expert in this realm. There is so much to learn and I am constantly seeking out information. The internet is great for quick searches and helping to identify varies plants, but I believe a few books is the way to go.
One book that has been imperative to my learning is Midwest Foraging by Lisa M. Rose. I reference it for everything from identification to various recipes. If you’re a Midwesterner like me, do yourself a favor and order the book. You’ll thank me 🙂
Below you will find the recipes I have used in my foraging adventures. This won’t be all of them, but they are the ones that my family has loved and I hope you will too. You will also find links to resources I find myself referencing time and time again when I am out searching out wild edibles. I hope they help you as much as they’ve helped me.
